Mother's Day is Still About the Father

The Sacred Calling of Motherhood and the Heart of God for Mothers

Motherhood is both a privilege and a burden that only women will ever truly know. No matter how society changes terminologies, definitions, or appearances, only females were designed by the Creator to give birth to human beings.

We hold a unique place in God’s design for humanity—to populate the earth and carry out His purposes in creation. Our ability and willingness to bear, raise, and nurture children are deeply connected to the overall purpose of God for the human race. Let us remember: we are the ones entrusted to bring forth God’s image-bearers into the world.

Motherhood is a serious calling. Before our careers and personal ambitions, being a godly mother, wife, and homemaker should remain a sacred priority. This does not diminish the value of women in other areas of life, but it reminds us of the eternal weight of motherhood in the eyes of God.

Mothers Carry Nations

What are mothers, really? Mothers are incubators, custodians, and stewards of future generations. We carry potential that can shape and shake the world.

Psalm 139 reminds us that the womb is God’s workshop. God is always at work in the wombs of mothers. I hope you truly grasp this, dear sister. He is the God of the womb. He opens and closes wombs. He calls servants from the womb. He told Rebekah that two nations were in her womb. God births destinies, callings, and even nations through mothers.

And because this must be said: abortion is the enemy’s attempt to override and destroy the creative work of God. It is a tragic assault on something sacred. Our wombs are holy ground and should never become places of destruction.

As mothers, we are partners with the Heavenly Father in fulfilling His purposes on earth. We cannot do this journey apart from Him. We need His wisdom, His strength, and His guidance every single day.

The Heart of God Toward Mothers

Let us look at how the Lord interacted with mothers throughout Scripture. God never changes, and His heart toward mothers remains the same today.

Rebekah — God Confides in Mothers

Genesis 25:21–26

Rebekah sought the Lord regarding her children, and God responded. He revealed His heart to her concerning the destiny of the sons she carried.

This is deeply encouraging to me because it shows that God speaks to mothers about their children when they seek Him sincerely.

Later, in Genesis 27, we see Rebekah helping Jacob secure the blessing. If we read only the surface of the story, it may seem manipulative or unfair. But when we remember what God had already revealed to her—that the older would serve the younger—we begin to understand that Rebekah was acting according to what she believed God had spoken.

That is why mothers must walk closely with God in guiding their children.

Even in my own life, I pray over my sons and ask the Lord to show me how He designed them. Sometimes God gives insights into their calling, temperament, or future, and it helps me mother them intentionally.

The Widow of Nain — Jesus Notices Mothers

Luke 7:11–15

Among a crowd of mourners, Jesus noticed one grieving mother.

She did not even ask Him to raise her son. Yet the Lord saw her sorrow and responded with compassion.

This touches me deeply because it reminds us that Jesus sees the silent grief of mothers. He sees the hidden heartbreaks, the private tears, and the worries we never voice aloud.

There is a special tenderness in the way the Lord deals with mothers.

The Syrophoenician Woman — Nothing Stops a Praying Mother

Matthew 15:21–28

This mother was desperate for her daughter’s deliverance, and she refused to give up.

Her persistence and faith moved the Lord Jesus to respond. Imagine what could have happened to her daughter had this woman stayed silent or fearful. Nothing can stop a praying mother!

If mothers today would rise in spiritual warfare and intercession for their children, the enemy would not have such boldness in destroying this generation.

Oh, that we would learn to say:

“Satan, you will have to go through me before you get to my children.”

We must become relentless in prayer. Intentional in intercession. Fierce in guarding the spiritual health of our families.

Hannah — God Partners With Surrendered Mothers

1 Samuel 1:9–18

Hannah went from barrenness to becoming the mother of one of the greatest prophets in Israel because she surrendered her desire to the Lord.

She was willing to give back to God the very son she had prayed for. What faith. What surrender. And God honoured it.

Motherhood is not easy, and there are sacrifices that only mothers understand. But Hannah’s story reminds us that we are never alone in this journey. God strengthens mothers who rely on Him. He exceeds expectations. He partners with women who desire to raise children for His glory.

The Mother of James and John — Jesus Understands a Mother’s Heart

Matthew 20:20–23

The mother of James and John boldly approached Lord Jesus regarding the future of her sons. The Lord did not harshly rebuke her. He answered her honestly, yet gently. I imagine Jesus understood the deep love behind her request. Mothers naturally desire good things for their children. The Lord sees that love and honours the heart behind it. Mothers are God’s instruments in shaping future generations indeed.

Mary — Jesus Honours Mothers

John 19:26–27, John 2:1–5

Even while dying on the cross, Lord Jesus made sure His mother was cared for. That alone reveals the honour He places on motherhood.

Then there is the wedding at Cana.

Mary approached the Lord regarding the need for wine, and although He said His time had not yet come, He still responded to her request.

And this brings me to something deeply personal.

One time, while I was praying and crying out to God for my children, I sensed the Lord impress these words upon my heart:

“I will tell you a secret—I cannot say "no" to a praying mother.”

Shortly after that, one of my greatest prayer requests for my children was answered.

God is moved by the prayers of mothers.

Encouragement for Every Mother

Dear sister, we must become Bible-based mothers. Praying mothers. Mothers who stay close to the Lord.

When we intentionally live this way, we carry tremendous spiritual influence—not only in shaping the destiny of our children, but also in resisting the works of the enemy against them.

The Lord is on our side.

A praying mother shapes the future of her children, but prayer also shapes the mother herself. Prayer humbles us before God. It reminds us that apart from Him, we are helpless.

Far be it from us to go even a single day without seeking God’s help for our families.

Stay sensitive to the voice of the Lord—both through Scripture and through the prompting of the Holy Spirit. God does not need our help to fulfil His will, but He does invite us to participate in guiding our children toward obedience and purpose.

And we can only do that when we ourselves are walking closely with Him. Amen.
