An Oil Crisis of a More Dangerous Kind

Keeping Your Lamp Burning in the Last Days

Hello, sister in Christ! It has been a little while since my last writing here at Flourishing Faith, and I am delighted to be back with you again. May this year of God’s favour see us all flourishing in faith, wisdom, and devotion to the Lord.

Today, I want to share an urgent message. The title alone carries weight. I pray you will read carefully. This is short and simple, but it contains an eternal call from the Father Himself.

Most believers are familiar with the Lord’s parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins in Matthew 25. We know the common takeaway: be vigilant, be faithful, and remain ready even if the Lord seems to delay. And that is certainly true. It is a lesson about readiness, wisdom, and perseverance in the last days.

The Meaning Behind the Lamps

In the parable, Jesus used bridesmaids as the main characters. Their task was to hold lamps and guide the bridegroom to the wedding feast, which often took place at night.

In this story, the bridegroom delayed his arrival. The women had to remain in place, ready to guide him whenever he came.

The lamps used in those days were small and required regular refilling with oil. The wise virgins understood this. They had foresight. They prepared for the possibility of delay. Whether the bridegroom came early or late, they were determined to be ready.

They planned.

They prepared.

They left nothing to chance.

The foolish virgins, however, were careless and short-sighted. They were not focused on their assignment. When they learned the bridegroom would be delayed, they slept instead of securing more oil. They copied the behaviour of the wise women outwardly, but inwardly they were unprepared.

A Spiritual Oil Crisis Today

Like those foolish virgins, many believers today are spiritually asleep.

They know what they ought to do, but they cannot be bothered. They do not take God’s expectations seriously. They assume there will always be more time.

But part of preparation is the waiting itself.

The waiting tests our devotion.

The waiting reveals our priorities.

The waiting proves whether we truly believe the warnings of Scripture.

Like those bridesmaids, we too have an assignment. We have a destiny to fulfil. We are called to be found watching when the Lord returns.

The problem is this: we do not know the exact hour.

The Lord’s return will come suddenly. It will catch His enemies off guard. But He does not want His people to be surprised. He wants us awake, watching, praying, and building His Kingdom.

Do Not Have Your Own Private Oil Crisis

Do not be found in a private oil crisis when the Lord comes. We must remain filled, topped up, and overflowing so that we are not disqualified from the wedding feast.

So how do we keep our lamps burning? How do we refill our oil?

In Scripture, oil often represents the Holy Spirit and the presence of God.

I think of oil as how much of God is truly present in my life—how much He influences my decisions, my habits, my relationships, my priorities, my everything.

Oil is depleted when I drift out of alignment with Him.

When I stumble into sin, I spill some. When I compromise, I lose more. When I rely on the world instead of the Lord, more seeps out.

You get the picture.

Three Ways to Keep Your Oil Full

1. Sacrifice

The Christian life is marked by dying to self and choosing God over ourselves.

It means carrying our cross daily and obeying Him at all costs.

Every act of sacrifice, obedience, and self-denial adds oil to our vessel.

2. Surrender

No one enters heaven without a surrendered will.

God does not force anyone into submission. Instead, He lovingly calls us to lay down our lives so we may take on His nature.

Jesus said:

“Whoever loves his life will lose it, while whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”(John 12:25)

A surrendered life receives a steady supply of oil. Even if the Bridegroom seems to tarry, there is no fear of running dry.

3. Service

While we eagerly await His return, we must not neglect the command He gave us:

“Go and make disciples of all nations…”

Every act of service to the Lord and to others is remembered by Heaven.

Nothing done for Christ is wasted.

He called us to be salt and light. And light requires oil. If we are truly on assignment, we can trust that He will continue supplying the oil that we need.

The Danger of Empty Religion

The Apostle Paul warned Timothy that in the last days people would reject sound doctrine and perilous times would come because of wickedness.

May we not be among them.

Saying a prayer alone will not save a life that refuses repentance. Church attendance alone will not save a heart that rejects holiness.

Jesus warned that many will hear the words:

“I never knew you.”

This is why the oil crisis of the last days is so dangerous.

It cannot be ignored. It cannot be postponed. It cannot be brushed aside.

Final Exhortation

Sacrifice. Surrender. Serve God.

Live a life of devotion to the Lord.

Keep your lamp burning. Keep your vessel full. Stay awake.

Our eternal future is at stake.
